Worth the Drive: IlluminOdyssey at CuriOdyssey in San Mateo

San Mateo’s CuriOdyssey, a much-loved hands-on science museum and playground, has lit up for the winter with IlluminOdyssey, a special exhibit that brings a glowing forest of science to the Museum.

Thanks to CuriOdyssey for sponsoring this post!

IlluminOdyssey is an immersive, interactive winter light experience running from now until January 26, 2025.

What to Expect at IlluminOdyssey

CuriOdyssey’s four-level indoor Redwood Hall (perfect for rainy days!) transforms into an indoor science playground full of hands-on exhibits and light installations. Activities include navigating a maze of luminous botanical geometry, playing with rainbow refraction, and observing swirling projections. A kid-favorite exhibit allows guests to “paint” with light on phosphorescent surfaces. All ages will enjoy altering the physical properties of light in incredible ways.

Toddlers will delight in dancing with their shadows, using specially positioned lights that allow them to see their shadows with clarity. A brand new area allows you to physically handle polarized light; three other exhibits received a glow-up this year!

“Great for science-interested kids and for adult amusement,” said visitor Alan Johnson. “The winter light show was fantastic and loads of fun with small ones.”

CuriOdyssey’s outdoor playground, included with admission, will engage kids for a long time, and the picnic areas offer a fantastic view of the Bay. Read our post about CuriOdyssey’s playground to learn more.

Visiting IlluminOdyssey

Note that IlluminOdyssey is not an evening event. The hours at CuriOdyssey are from 10 am to 5 pm and the IlluminOdyssey exhibit is a darkened area with lanterns and other lights guiding where to walk. A table with colored lanterns (as pictured above) to carry is at the start of the exhibit. Simply leave the lantern at the table near the exit when you are done with it!

Admission costs $27.95 for adults; $23.95 for children over 18 months.
