I have a shelf full of travel books that I’m reluctant to toss because they remind me of my past life. However, I know that next time I visit Brussels, Costa Rica, or the beaches of North Carolina, I’ll probably rely on a digital tool to provide me with restaurant recommendations and up-to-date hours and prices of attractions. There is something nice, however, about a guide book that you can take with you in your backpack. And mobile devices don’t always work in redwood forests.
Local parent Laure Latham has written BEST HIKES WITH KIDS SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, and you can buy it on Amazon. Known online as Frog Mom, Laure (who is French, hence the name), runs a website dedicated to raising confident girls who love the outdoors.
BEST HIKES WITH KIDS SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA spans from Santa Cruz to Sonoma and includes more than twenty destinations in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties combined. Stroller-friendly paths are noted, as are any special programs offered by regional parks to youth.
A nice Father’s Day gift idea might be this book bundled with a packed picnic and a car pointed toward Redwood Regional Park.

Another good book is Golden Gate Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Walk and Bike in San Francisco and Marin, or visit the website http://www.bahiker.com/kids.html.
